The First Vice-President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Her Excellency, Epsy Campbell Barr was full of praise as she lauded African women leaders for their exemplary works in the pursuit of the ideals of a better world for all.
“Where we are at as we view the world and the global challenges of the future, specifically looking at the role of African leaders in these new forms of a civic future, the role of women African leaders remains integral,”
“The historical contributions of the Pan African Women Organisation and their fight for the indepence and political inclusion of women in decision making tables has birthed the modern world we see today, that has a number of influential African women leading the charge towards a more sustainable future for all,” remarked Vice President Barr.
“We want to build alliances with more African women to make things happen. Not only for us (women) but for the people of our countries too” Her Excellency concluded.
In her own words, Vice President Barr regards herself as “the African descendant women”, forming part of the larger diaspora community that the African Union views as its sixth region. Over and above the five continent-based regions.
Dr. Levi Uche Madueke, the AU Expo Commissioner General, who convoyed Her Excellency’s delegation around the pavilion said the visit was poignant in the sense that the world was acknowledging the historical works of African women.
Dr. Madueke said “Madame Vice President’s appointment to her office was historic and to have her visit our pavilion to learn about how we celebrate African women such as the founding mother’s, who greatly contributed to the struggle for Africa's liberation from colonialism, elimination of apartheid & eradication of gender injustices and I hope she leaves our pavilion inspired to continue championing the will of her people.”
In her closing remarks as she concluded her pavilion tour, Vice President Barr said “congratulations to the African Union! You are on your way to making Africa a place in the future, where the dreams of women and men come true!”
